Why would anyone who doesn’t know Queen want to go to a musical built around the rock group’s greatest hits? The answer is the devilishly clever script by British writer/director Ben Elton. I loved the show.
Queen is an influential British hard rock group whose hey day was the 70s and 80s. Elton has been nothing short of brilliant in weaving their songs into a tongue-in-cheek story. Set in the future where thought control is the norm, a few breakaway Bohemians are part of a rebellion to create freedom of expression through the long banned rock ‘n’ roll. The script is a hilarious potpourri of pop culture references, peppered with many Canadianisms
Mark Fisher’s sets and costumes are eye-catching and the house band rocks. What’s more, the all-Canadian cast led by Yvan Pedneault and Erica Peck can belt out a song. Trust me, you’ll laugh a lot.
We Will Rock You continues in an open run.
