I finally made a long overdue visit to Second City and caught the show Tip of the Melting Iceberg. I found sharp and sophisticated sketch comedy routines that presume that an intelligent audience is bringing a body of knowledge into the theatre. I also found an extremely strong acting ensemble.
Needless to say, the politics lean left and Canada’s Afghanistan policy comes in for drubbing. Other topics include cell phones, Air Canada, charity receptions, romantic dinners, border guards, blind dates, the Blue Jays, organic products, the morning after pill, a cottage getaway, Dr. Deepak Chopra, ageing, mating pandas, and political correctness.
The cast of Marty Adams, Jim Annan, Lauren Ash, Darryl Hinds, Scott Montgomery and Karen Parker pull off satire that is right up to form, although – be warned – some skits do sail close to the wind of good taste.
Second City continues to be a terrific night out.
Tip of the Melting Iceberg continues until Jun. 24.
