The double bill of Rubberbandance Group and bjm_danse created such a demand for tickets at Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur that extra seats had to be added. Hip-hop and jazz dance by these Montreal companies were clearly a boffo combination.
Rubberbandance Group is irresistible. Artistic director Victor Quijada’s dance vocabulary is a cunning fusion of hip-hop and ballet. The special twist is his exotic choice of mostly classical music. I’ve now seen the company three times and I have a growing appreciation. This time through, I recognized meaning and intellect behind the catchy moves.
[bjm_danse] is the new brand of Les ballets Jazz de Montréal. The company presented Aszure Barton’s Les Chambres des Jacques” which was filled with her quirky and eccentric choreography with its snake-like suppleness and unpredictable muscle impulses. Barton’s inspiration was to present humanity at its most intimate and banal which she did in witty fashion.
