One Luminato event that may be slipping under the radar is Blink, the collective creation by the Soulpepper Academy. These are the talented young actors who are company apprentices. Blink is about a photojournalist who has worked in Gaza, Iraq and Afghanistan, and who is clearly collateral damage due to the experience.
Blink has everything going for it. It is very well acted for the most part, and superbly directed by Weyni Mengesha. The production values are first rate, with real pictures from war zones donated by advocacy groups. The show is intense, even harrowing.
The problem is, I felt a been there, done that with the subject matter. Am I so bombarded by bad/sad war news that I am now jaded? I felt that Blink offered no new insights into this troubling subject.
Nonetheless, even though Blink is preaching to the choir, the production is certainly worth a visit.
Blink continues at the Young Centre until Jun. 15.
