Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is probably The Bard’s most universally accessible play. In 2005 British director Tim Supple travelled to India and Sri Lanka to look for an all-Asian cast.

The production premiered in New Delhi in 2006, and is performed in a dizzying array of languages. It is a mark of this important milestone in theatre that you still understand what is happening, even though you might not understand all the words.

The burst of energy from the cast captures the imagination right from the start, and the cross-Asian theatre practices are absolutely engaging, including the use of dance, music, aerial acrobatics, and live musicians on stage.

The Asian creative team, particularly set and costume designer Sumant Jayakrishnan, has created a world of shimmering magic. The cast is extraordinarily agile and talented.

In this production, two cultures meet and an important bridge has been forged. What a wonderful gift the Luminato Festival brought us with this production.
