If you have a poppet in your family, the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a sure fire hit. I had a 9-year-old with me who loved the adventures of the Potts family and their flying car.

The original children’s book was written in 1964 by Ian Fleming of James Bond fame. The film musical with songs by the Sherman brothers was made in 1968. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang became a successful stage show in 2002.

The good news is that the current touring production has a strong cast. In fact, most road shows these days are peopled with Broadway quality. The set and the costumes are eye-catching and the special effects are terrific – especially the car riding through the air.

Steve Wilson as the inventor father Caractacus Potts is a handsome leading man. Dirk Lumbard and Scott Cote practically steal the show as the Vulgarian spies.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang continues at the Canon Theatre until Jan. 4.
