Tracy Dawson’s entertaining first play them & us is a challenge to actors. The four-hander requires the cast to play 30 different characters. Sometimes poignant, sometimes hilarious, them & us is a chronicle of both the yearning for connections and the failure to establish meaningful contact.

The cast is Grade A. Sarah Dodd, Michael Healey, Gray Powell and Dawson all have bone fide acting chops, and the four bite right down into the characters, going beyond the superficial to find the three dimensional.

Kimberly Purtell’s set is made up of movable boxes, manipulated by the cast to provide scenic changes, and while economical, all that moving around does wear thin. Fortunately, director Ruth Madoc-Jones has ensured that the character core of each little scene is the focus, which makes for short and sweet vignettes. Dawson, who began her career in the world of comedy, certainly knows how to write snappy dialogue.

them & us continues at Theatre Passe Muraille until Jan. 31.
