UBUNTU (The Capetown Project) is a huge hit at the Tarragon. To create the play, director Daryl Cloran and his Canadian actors joined up with South African actors from Capetown’s Baxter Theatre.

Ubuntu is a word that describes one’s connection to his or her community and ancestors. In other words, “A person is a person through other people.” The play movingly explores what happens to people when they lose that connection.

The play is not perfect – in fact, there are giant holes in logic – but it is a production that succeeds despite its weaknesses. The brilliant physicality where the actors become their own props and sets, the imaginative scene transformations, and the sterling performances by the three Canadian and two South African actors make UBUNTU (The Capetown Project) a poignant and exhilarating theatrical experience, both at the same time.

This is definitely a run don’t walk production.

UBUNTU (The Capetown Project) continues at the Tarragon Theatre until Mar. 1.
