American playwright Joelle Arqueros has written a collection of monologues under the collective title Sex, Relationships and Sometimes…Love. The material certainly covers the waterfront, from the funny to the poignant, from the arrogant to the pathetic. What is interesting is that each monologue is spoken by a different person, so that 25 people are needed for the show.

To find the large cast, a broad call was put out for auditions, and 300 people were whittled down to 40 who revolve through the monologues, which means each performance will be different. That being said, it is very clear that director Ryan Singh has carefully coached the performers.

While some of them are going to have to learn to speak up, and some performances are stronger than others, the potpourri of actors do carry off an enjoyable evening of home truths.

Sex, Relationships and Sometimes…Love continues at the Poor Alex Theatre until Nov. 8. The show runs for two performances every Sunday.
