There is a long list of cheesy cult films that are finding new life as rock musicals. The latest is the 1984 horror film The Toxic Avenger where a nerd called Melvin falls into a vat of toxic waste and emerges as an incredibly ugly super hero.

The team of Joe DiPietro and David Bryan have created a slew of clever lyrics and politically incorrect dialogue that keep a permanent smile on your face. Even the over-loud music can’t take away from the cheeky and satiric direction of John Rando.

The Canadian cast is superb. The great Louise Pitre plays a number of roles as do Jamie McKnight and Daren A. Herbert. The fixed characters are Evan Alexander Smith as Melvin and Brittany Gray as the blind librarian Sarah who is the love of Melvin’s life.

This outrageous production will keep you laughing. I had a great time.

The Toxic Avenger Musical continues at the Music Hall until Jan. 3.
