Judging by the near flawless performances of the National Ballet of Canada’s The Sleeping Beauty that I saw over the weekend, artistic director Karen Kain has certainly raised classical standards to a new high.

Everyone is on show, from the corps to principal dancers. Choreographer Rudolf Nureyev included challenging variations for the leads, fairies and fairytale characters. There are gorgeous ensemble pieces, particularly for the female corps de ballet, and, of course, a grand pas de deux for the central couple. The National dancers romped through the difficulties.

I saw the very talented Guillaume Côté partner Heather Ogden on Friday, and Bridgett Zehr on Sunday. The seasoned Ogden is a great classicist and took command of the stage. New principal dancer Zehr has both technique and acting skills. She is a consummate ballerina who performs with delicacy and grace.

In short, this truly classical ballet is a triumph for the company.

The Sleeping Beauty continues at the Four Seasons Centre until Nov. 22.
