Weekend Dance Wrap

Talk about an embarrassment of riches.

The National Ballet mixed program and Meg Stuart were still running this past weekend, when they were joined by Denise Fujiwara and Susie Burpee for DanceWorks, while London, England-based Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion wrapped up the Dancemakers festival. I’m pleased to report that the shows all seemed to be well-attended. In fact, the great Meg Stuart herself was in the audience for Burrows and Fargion.

Dancer Burrows and composer Fargion jointly perform works inspired by Dada – by that I mean works that break all the artistic rules. Cheap Lecture is a very droll treatise on life and art rendered through choral speaking, musical instruments, and the odd movement pattern. The Cow Piece involves convoluted movement of an army of small plastic cow figurines, a barrage of songs, and movement.

In Lost and Found, Fujiwara uses butoh to portray a repressed woman, while Burpee and Wild enact the sexual games of a couple in Fidelity’s Edge.
