Theatrefront – Tara Beagan’s The Mill (Part Three: The Woods)

A last season highlight was the first two parts of the Theatrefront tetralogy The Mill, a gothic look at Canadian history written by four different playwrights. The Mill (Part Three: The Woods) goes back into the past, and takes place in 1646. It’s just as wonderfully creepy as its predecessors.

This time we meet the aboriginal Wendat mother and daughter, Marie and Lyca respectively, and by the end, we know why Lyca keeps showing up at the Mill, two centuries later. Both Michelle Latimer and Holly Lewis give passionate performances.

Ryan Hollyman, who plays the mill owner in later versions, is now an ethno-ornithologist in New France who stumbles upon Marie and Lyca and sets in motion the horrors to follow.

Tara Beagan has written a tense play gilded by director Sarah Garton Stanley’s blood and thunder direction.

The Mill (Part Three: The Woods) continues at the Young Centre until Apr. 3. Parts One and Two repeat Mar. 29 to Apr. 2.
