Second City – Second City for Mayor

The new revue Second City for Mayor is certainly topical. The show has great ideas, but there aren’t a lot of belly laughs. Perhaps this group of devisors decided on darker wit rather than laugh out loud, but regardless of the laugh meter, Second City is always worth a visit.

Director Melody A. Johnson has added in some polish. There are stylized mime sequences to music between each skit, and there is an overall theme. The place is called Citytown, and we follow the townsfolk throughout a typical Citytown day, with many of the characters showing up in the cohesive grand finale.

My favourite skit bar none involves a South Indian passenger and a white cab driver – a brilliant reversal of roles where the white guy gets asked all the stupid questions that we usually ask the brown guy. And then there is the hapless priest trying to be hip.

Second City for Mayor continues at Second City for an unlimited run.
