Why Not Theatre – I’m So Close

The Arts2010-4-9By: Classical Staff

Reviewed by Paula Citron.

The members of Why Not Theatre met at the Jacques Lecoq school in Paris, the leading centre for physical theatre. Not surprisingly, their brilliant show I’m So Close is a cunning fusion of text, movement and visual projections.

Ravi Jain, Katrina Bugaj and Troels Hagen Findsen have devised a show inspired by Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time and the finding of Neolithic remains in Italy of a couple in an embrace.

The microcosm is two people’s romance and marriage. He has developed a new source of fuel and jets around the world on business matters. She becomes increasingly marginalized in the relationship. Throughout are dazzling projections of the cosmos, the bones, and a host of other evocative metaphors.

Shows like I’m So Close are hard to describe as the performers play both people and objects. Suffice it to say that Why Not Theatre is witty, intelligent and provocative.

I’m So Close continues at the Theatre Centre until Apr. 3.
