Tea at the Palace
Puppetmongers/Tarragon
Written by Ann Powell, David Powell and Sharon Weisbaum
Directed by Sharon Weisbaum
Performed by Ann and David Power
Tarragon Theatre Extra Space
Dec. 18, 2010 to Jan. 1, 2011

Tea at the Palace launched the Puppetmongers as a holiday tradition at the Tarragon Extra Space 21 years ago, and it is just as charming now as then.

Brother and sister Ann and David Powell are the Puppetmongers. Their particular vision is to show the artifice, and we see them both manipulate the various-sized puppets and change the scenery. The Powells are not the best actors in the world, but their gentle manner is beguiling.

The cunning set looks like just a doorway and two large chests, but all sorts of adorable pop-up windows add to the whimsy. The Powells do their own delightful design.

Each holiday season they change the shows, and over time, they’ve developed a wonderful repertoire which keeps Puppetmongers fresh.

If you have children in your family, or even if you don’t, you still have a few days to catch this enchanting show based on Russian folktales.

Tea at the Palace continues at the Tarragon Theatre Extra Space until Jan. 1.
