Choreography by Kevin O’Day, Tedd Robinson and Robert Glumbek
Performed by Yvonne Ng and Robert Glumbek
Apr. 28 to 30, 2011
As a couple, Yvonne Ng and Robert Glumbek shouldn’t be dancing together. She’s 4 feet, 10 inches and comes up to his armpit. But together, this height difference inspires choreographers.
American Kevin O’Day’s visual treat…Level on My Level…begins with Ng costumed in a huge skirt that is twice her length. It is a barrier that keeps them apart. Only when Ng removes the skirt, do the two find a way to come together.
The other duet, A Tale Begun, is a reworked 2004 Glumbek piece in which Ng is strapped to Glumbek’s back by a harness. It is a poignant evocation of a father/daughter relationship.
The two solos are Sticks by Tedd Robinson, and Glumbek’s Relatively Related. In the first, Ng evokes butoh inspired shamanism. The second has Ng calling the cues as Glumbek negotiates through material by six different choreographers who set work on him during his career.
In a word, the show is charming.
Mixed Repertoire continues at the Enwave Theatre until tomorrow.
