Impromptu Splendor’s The Script Tease Project
National Theatre of the World
Improvised and Performed by Ron Pederson, Naomi Snieckus and Matt Baram
Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace
May 24 to 29, 2011
The pompous sounding title, National Theatre of the World, has a grand plan. The comedy troupe wants to legitimize improv as bona fide theatre.
Ron Pederson, Naomi Snieckus and Matt Baram are very clever at tying improv to theatre. Their new show, Impromptu Splendor’s The Script Tease Project, has solicited two page teaser scripts from the brightest and the best. They read the two pages, which they’ve not seen before, and then improv the rest of the play in the style of.
On opening night, Judith Thompson contributed the script, and was on hand for a very interesting Q&A. NTW’s trio were superb at capturing Thompson’s raw, earthy magic realism, while never losing their humour base. Other script teasers include Daniel MacIvor, Brad Fraser, Morris Panych and Linda Griffiths.
Definitely catch a show if you can. NTW performs highly intelligent, sophisticated, challenging improv that is also great entertainment.
The Script Tease Project continues at Theatre Passe Muraille until May 29.
