The Lower Ossington Theatre has become home to shows that feature emerging artists just out of theatre school. In the 1973 Lloyd Webber/Rice musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the enthusiasm of these young people carries the day.
Robert Wilkinson is both the director and the musical director and he proves he can use a small space very effectively. He is ably aided by choreographer Amelia Hironaka. In fact, the show is highly choreographed throughout, and there are some great touches like the clever 3-person camel.
Adam Proulx practically steals the show as the Elvis clone Pharaoh. Jeff Hookings is a bit low key as Joseph, and his voice is a bit pinched at the top. The three female narrators, Shannon Dickens, Rebecca Perry and Jada Rifkin, make nice harmony together.
The charming production features Michael Galloro’s colourful set and Tarrah Kennedy’s imaginative costumes.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat continues at the Lower Ossington Theatre until Dec. 30.
