Interview with Mike Duncan, co-host of Good Day GTA

1. How did you get started in broadcasting?
I actually was hired by the station back in the summer of 1986 because I could edit film. I had been an animation student at Sheridan College, and when that didn’t work out, I was looking for work. The station (based in Cobourg at that time) was looking for a production assistant and I applied. They figured that if I knew how to edit film, surely I could edit audio tape. And they were right. Since then, I have been a producer, interviewer, librarian, music director and host with the station. Sorry to all radio students out there, but I’m pretty much self-taught and as Ferris Bueller says when he plays the clarinet, “Never had one lesson”.

2. What’s the best movie you’ve seen?
Can I pick two? “The Philadelphia Story” with Carey Grant, Katherine Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart. Snappy, hilarious dialogue – the kind of writing you don’t see anymore in film. And the other is the Coen brothers’ masterpiece, “The Big Lebowski”. A film literally about nothing, but it is so funny and so well put together that it delights me every time I see it. I’m also a big fan of the Toho “Godzilla” movie series.

3. If you could only go to ONE more concert in your life, who would you see?
Hmmm…..that’s tough one. There’s a LOT of great concerts that I have missed over the years (and probably will again). I think I would like to jump in a time-travel machine and see the Led Zeppelin reunion concert at London’s O2 arena back in 2007.

4. What would your wife say is your most annoying habit?

Forgetfulness. While I can remember and recall all kinds of political, historical, musical and artistic trivia, I can’t remember what plans we made for 2 days from now.

5. Everybody has one thing they cook REALLY well. What’s your specialty?
Meatloaf. I make the greatest meatloaf you have ever tasted. And baked beans (the secret is to let them cook for at least 18 hours).

6. Coolest person in entertainment history – GO!
Again, just one? I can’t narrow it down, so here’s a few that I admire greatly: Mark Twain, Antonin Dvorak, Gore Vidal, Paul Westerberg, Peter Carey, Johannes Brahms, Wes Anderson, Lloyd Cole, David Adams Richards, Grant Morrison, Steve Martin and Kurt Russell for his magnificent head of hair.

7. Favorite gift you ever received.
A bookmark that my daughter made for me when she was 3 years old. For almost 20 years now, it has held my place in every book I have read.

8. Fiction or non-fiction. Why?
I don’t make that distinction. Fiction can take you to places you have never been and teaches you something you didn’t know about yourself or the world, as does non-fiction. My only bottom line is if it is well-written and interests me, then I will read it.

9. One book you wish they would make into a TV show.
I’m usually not a big fan of book adaptations. No matter how attentive to detail they are, they never match up to my expectations of what I have read (Heck, I didn’t even like the Avengers because I felt it didn’t match up to the spectacle of the comic books). That being said, if someone were interested in a long-form mini-series, you couldn’t do any better than taking a few of David Adams Richards “Miramichi” novels and adapting them. It would make for some riveting viewing.

10. One classical composer that should have his/her own movie.
Tchaikovsky. His conflicted life and ultimately tragic ending would make for an interesting drama if done correctly. And his bitchy jibes about his contemporary composers would be a nice comedic payoff. You’d need a powerful yet understated actor to play him.

Hear Mike Duncan on Good Day GTA weekday mornings from 5:30AM – 10AM on The New Classical FM.
