Get Active and Get Involved with the Ontario Senior Games Association 55+

Station News2016-6-9By: Classical Staff

Since mid-1980’s, the OSGA 55+ (Ontario Senior Games Association) has been committed to promoting an active lifestyle for those 55+ adults who are not involved in the more advanced or master levels of activities. Its program is designed to not only provide an avenue for this generation to be active but also to  meet others who share a common recreational interest, while helping keep their minds sharp and their bodies in shape.

The OSGA 55+ is a not-for-profit organization with 37 Member Districts throughout the province. Each of these Districts are run by committed volunteers whose goals are to provide opportunities for its local 55+ population to enjoy friendly competition in a variety of different type of events, both traditional and non-traditional.

The OSGA 55+ program also provides other opportunities to participate at different levels, including provincially as part of the Ontario 55+ Summer and Winter Games as well as Regional 55+ Games in 6 Regions and other sport-specific Open/Invitational events open to all residents of Ontario.  The OSGA supports over 18+ summer events and 10+ winter events provincially.

The OSGA’s biggest challenge is to keep as many of the 55+ adults of Ontario active and healthy by providing a program that captures their interest.  Our goal is to attract the average person looking to have fun and maintain that active lifestyle.  As our Mission states:

To provide older adults (55+) in Ontario with an opportunity to:

  • increase their social interaction with others,
  • increase their physical and mental well-being,
  • maintain and enhance their psychological and physiological well-being through participation in recreational activities and sports.

Testaments – Why I Participate / Volunteer with the OSGA 55+

Compete with the fire that still lives within, but more importantly, play for the fun and love of the games! Sports have always been important to me. After decades of coaching school aged children and youth, it is awesome to share and encourage the love of sports with those who have long been out of school. The social interaction enjoyed through the games helps to keep all of us young!
Sheran Barker – District 10 – Hastings/Lennox & Addington/Prince Edward/Frontenac

The Ontario Senior Games is a great organization where you can meet old friends, make new ones and can certainly have lasting friendships. Seniors have an opportunity to enjoy various events, feel safe, share stories and mingle with others who have so much in common. I have nothing but positive feedback to give and can’t wait to be a participant.  Good job!!
Helene Belanger – District 2A – Timmins/Temiskaming

When we first moved to this area in 2006 we didn’t know anyone. Without the senior games we would not have met the people we have. We truly enjoy the friendship and many activities that we ‎take part each year.
Harvey and Charlotte Norton are active members of the District 29 – Huron/Perth/Middlesex Committee as well as very active participants, 10 + events each year.
