The mystery of Magritte persists.
Why three apples? The Trinity, perhaps?
Why apples, rather than – let’s say – bananas. Or grapes? Is it because it was so intimately involved in Man’s expulsion from Paradise?
Why red, yellow and blue? Because they are the Primary colours, whence all other colours are derived?
Or is it just Magritte having a little fun thinking all along as he applies brush to canvas: ‘Let’s keep them guessing…’
