Helen Mirren on Vasily Kandinsky

Art Tidbits2013-9-11By: Marilyn Lightstone

The arts – all of them – the visual; the literary; the musical and dramatic – are all members of the same family. What a joy to see and hear this short discourse on Kandinsky (who both mystifies and delights me) given by the great actress Helen Mirren.

And yes, I refer to her as an actress rather than an actor, which is what the Politically Correct would surely call her, to my great dismay. The history of the actress is utterly different from that of the actor, a much greater struggle, evidenced by the fact that, in England, women were not even permitted to be on the stage until well into the 17th century, and even then were thought to be no better than harlots. When a word is obliterated, so is its history.
