Giving Back

WorldVision Gift

What’s this? That was my reaction when I saw a gift box with a bow attached to a press release. Turns out, it was something to think about. The tag on the box posed the question: what do 8 out of 10 Canadians need for Christmas this year? When I opened the box, the answer was there in bold letters: Nothing. It came with a glossy gift catalogue from the charity Worldvision Canada. For a hundred bucks, you can buy a goat for a child in Africa – that will give up to 250 litres of milk a year. Or, their most popular offering – two hens and a rooster. These can produce 150 eggs a year, providing food, income and a growing flock.  And it’s hard to go wrong with these gifts. According to Ipsos Reid, 84 per cent of us would rather have a gift given on our behalf than receive some socks or a sweater.
