I just a boxful of stuff from the Grocery Innovations Show – so here’s a preveiew of some of the new things you’re going to find on supermarket shelves. The industry says the big trends are health and convenience, and one of the big new products – is vitamin enhanced water. This drink is huge in the states, so I asked food writer and nutrition expert Rose Reisman what she thinks.
“If you read the label, they really are enhancing it with some good vitamins. So here’s the thing: it’s not a lot of calories — it’s usually about 50 calories per eight-ounces, not bad. A lot of kids, for instance, and teens will drink it a lot more than they will just plain water. And you know, if someone is not eating well at all, they’re probably not a bad thing — and they’re better for you than the energy drinks, like the Gatorade.”
There are also some new small sweet snacks designed to satisfy those late afternoon cravings. Goody 2 Chews comes in chocolately and caramel flavours but is made from fruit and nuts. And there’s a healthier take on chips. The terra brand which is made from root vegetables and costs about five bucks a bag – is now low sodium and trans fat free. But check the calorie count – it’s nearly 300 calories for a handful of twenty chips. Enjoy.
