There’s good news if you’re at high risk for diabetes. A review of 16 clinical studies shows positive evidence that Chinese herbal medicines may prevent the disease.
The Cochrane review out of Australia says combining herbal remedies with lifestyle changes is twice as effective as lifestyle changes alone at normalizing patients’ blood sugar levels.
The clinical trials included 1400 people who received 15 different herbal formulations.
Those given the herbal formulations were less likely to develop full blown diabetes during the study period. These trials lasted from one month to two years and no adverse effects were reported.
There is a caveat though. The researchers say more study is needed, but this work will go a long way to provide guidance for further trials.
