The healing power of MUSIC is being taken to the next level here in Toronto. Scientists at the University of Toronto will be at the forefront of this emerging field with the launch of a new centre on music and health research.
The proposed centre would be based at U of T and would bring together experts on the cutting edge of using music to improve such medical conditions as strokes, Alzheimer’s, chronic pain and Parkinson’s. A draft proposal says the centre would bring together experts in music, neuro-science, medicine and psychology from universities across Ontario and at least half a dozen GTA hospitals. The experts agree agree the prospect of using music as medicine is critical at a time of rising healthcare costs, an aging population and a growing need for palliative care.
