Here’s another reason to start the day with a good breakfast. Especially for men. A study out of Harvard finds men who skip breakfast have a 27 percent higher risk of suffering a heart attack or heart disease than those who start the day with something in their stomach.
The study confirms earlier research on the connection between eating habits and cardiovascular disease. Those findings showed that breakfast skippers are 15 percent more likely to gain a substantial amount of weight and 21 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
This study, in the journal Circulation, is the first to look at long-term risk of heart attack, and it found that these men are also more likely to smoke, drink, and get less exercise. Instead of picking up another meal later in the day, the research showed they tend to “feast” on higher-calorie meals when they do eat. Previous studies have found this can result in high cholesterol and elevated blood pressure, compared with eating smaller meals.
And breakfast is a time when people tend to eat healthfully. By skipping a meal that usually features fiber or fruit or yogurt, they end up missing out on essential daily nutrients.
The study did not include women, but researchers figure they would have the same results. Bottom line, this reinforces the age-old emphasis on the importance of breakfast. And unlike other lifestyle changes, it doesn’t take much time or effort to make sure you eat before you start the day.
