Arthritis and Milk

Health2015-10-30By: Libby Znaimer

Here’s important news for women with arthritis in their knees. A large study has found evidence that the more milk you drink, the less that knee joint will deteriorate. Researchers collected detailed health, diet and behavioral data on more than 2000 men and women with knee osteoarthritis. They found that increasing milk consumption was associated with slower progression of the disease in women, but not in men.

The researchers don’t know why gender makes a difference. And not all dairy was associated with benefits, even with the women. Yogurt  appeared to have no effect on arthritis progression, and  women who ate more cheese actually had greater deterioration in their joints.

It’s possible that the high levels of saturated fat in cheese may worsen the condition ,  or contribute to obesity, which would also do that.

The study published in the journal Arthritis Care and Research does not prove a causal connection but the lead authors had no hesitation recommending that people with osteoarthritis drink more milk – low-fat or fat-free of course. How much? Well the women with the best results in this study drank seven glasses a week or more. The beneficial effects began with just three weekly glasses.
