It’s not a huge surprise – but now a study out of Johns Hopkins confirms that people who cook at home frequently eat healthier and consume fewer calories than those who cook less.

The researchers say that those who make most of their meals at home consume fewer carbohydrates, less sugar and less fat than those who cook less or not at all – and that’s true even if they are not trying to lose weight. Not only that – but those who cooked at home  six-to-seven nights a week – also consumed fewer calories when they ate out.

The numbers are eye-opening. The researchers found that 8 percent of adults cooked dinner once a week or less  and this group consumed an average of  2,301 total calories, 84 grams of fat and 135 grams of sugar each day. Forty-eight percent cooked dinner six to seven times a week and they consumed less than 2,200 calories, 81 grams of fat and 119 grams of sugar on an average day. Those who cook at home more often rely less on frozen foods and are less likely to choose fast food when they eat out.

Time is a factor – people who work more than 35 hours a week also cook less often. But everyone should be aware of the benefits of home cooking.
