Music Theory2013-5-9By: Stephen Tseronakis

The popular song sung to celebrate the birth of family and friends Happy Birthday to You, is one of the world’s most popular songs. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, this song is the most recognized one in the English language and has even been translated into 18 different languages.

The melody of Happy Birthday to You comes from the song Good Morning to All, which was written and composed by American siblings Patty Hill and Mildred J. Hill in 1893. Patty was a kindergarten principal developing various teaching methods and Mildred was a pianist and composer.

The sisters created Good Morning to All as a song that would be easy to be sung by their students.

One notable use was by comedy pianist Victor Borge, who would begin playing Moonlight Sonata and then transition into the popular birthday song.
