This week’s picks from the Master Sommelier…
Weinert 2003 Malbec*** 90
Mendoza, Argentina, $18.95
Vintages July 5th LCBO# 0556795
Nicely crafted Malbec made in a more traditional, old world style. Clean, fruity, inviting fresh red and black berry with integrated wood and exotic spice. Fat, fullish palate with fine concentration and complexity at the price. Drink now-2013.
FlatRock Cellars 2006 The Rusty Shed Chardonnay *** 91points
VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara, $24.95
Vintages July 5th LCBO# 0001552
This wine is immediately impressive with its attractive fresh citrus and lemon beurre blanc notes, with just the right amount of wood integrated into cool climate fruit. Dry, with juicy, saliva-inducing acidity, well-balanced alcohol and above average intensity and length. This will appeal to fans of more old world, Burgundian style Chardonnay. Drink now-2012.
Attems 2007 Collio Pinot Grigio *** 90
Friuli, Italy, $19.95
Vintages July 5th 0707950
This more Gris-like Pinot Grigio ranks in the top level of Italian versions, much more serious than the average. It has a predictable copper tinge, and high intensity aromas of stone fruit, pear and ripe citrus. The richness on the palate lends an almost sweet, mouth filling impression, with fat-covered tropical fruit/pineapple notes. Excellent length. Serious stuff. Drink now-2010.
