The extremely successful erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey, which currently tops the NY Times Best Seller’s List, is now influencing another list: the UK Classical Singles Chart.

Over the past four weeks The Tallis Scholars version of ‘Spem in alum’ has climbed from number 20 to number 7. The piece is featured in the novel and it seems that readers have been inspired to listen to the music themselves and have been downloading the piece on itunes.

The founder and director of the Tallis Scholars, Peter Phillips, said: “I haven’t read 50 Shades of Grey but I am most grateful to the author for introducing so many new listeners to the musical sensation that is Thomas Tallis’s Spem in alium.”

Tallis’s work is not the only classical music suggested by author EL James. On her website, a soundtrack to Fifty Shades of Grey is listed. Classical composers include Bach, Chopin, Verdi and more.
