Turning a Passion into Art

Arts News2015-7-29By: Classical Staff

Yasmin Nurming-Por has a love for something that is truly a Collingwood Icon. Fascinated with the local Grain Elevators, Yasmin began to research the history of the structure and impact that they had not only on the town but on also it’s infamous shipping past.

“I have a background in art history and during visits to Collingwood I became interested in the local history. I spent time at the Museum and with the staff and with their help and that of the towns we came up with this intriguing idea.”

That idea, to take local photos and video and put them up using the grain elevators as a back drop will be showcased this upcoming weekend at the first ever Side Launch Festival. The event will focus on Collingwood waterfront and the heritage that the shipyards and Georgian Bay played in helping to develop Collingwood into what it is today.

“The show will consist of still photos from pre 1948 and will loop over a two hour period on the first night. The second evening will showcase the shipyards and will feature video minus the sound of some of the spectacular boots and launches that the town has witnessed throughout the years.”

Both shows will run from 9:00 PM – 11:00 PM and the town has been instrumental in working with Yasmin to get this presentation off the ground. “The town really wanted to have the terminals as a focal point and what a better way than using it as the backdrop of the presentation.”

The showcase entitled AT SEA can been seen from Millennium Park and the Collingwood Harbour beginning at 9PM on August 1st and 2nd.
