OTTAWA OVERHAULING ‘ICONIC’ CANADIAN FOOD GUIDE

ZoomerNews2016-10-24By: Classical Staff

”The classic one-size-fits all guide no longer meets the needs of Canadians,” says Health Minister Jane Philpott.

And with those words she told the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress in Montreal, the ‘iconic’ Canada Food Guide has not kept up with our changing demographics and lifestyles and will be changed.

Philpott adds the guide must be ”relevant and practical” and provide advice for Canadians whether they’re walking down a shopping aisle or reading a menu in a restaurant.

The guide was last updated in 2007 and this revision is expected to take years and include a strategy that’s expected to include rules to eliminate trans fats and reduce the amount of salt in processed foods.

Health Canada says six out of 10 adults are considered overweight and four out of five are at risk of developing cancer, heart disease or Type-2 diabetes.
