The former nurse accused of murdering 8 elderly residents in two south western Ontario nursing homes, is back in court today. Elizabeth Wettlaufer of Woodstock, is scheduled to make an appearance by video link.
Meantime, the issue of patient safety in long-term care continues to dog the Wynne Government at Queens Park but Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins told Question Period the government has spent millions of dollars to pay for more support workers, nurses and behavioral specialists.
A recent Chief Coroner’s Report called for improved safety in the province’s long-term care homes. It pointed to a number of incidents of resident on resident violence and 9 homicides at provincial nursing homes in 2015. That figure does not include the 8 murders in London and Woodstock that Wettlaufer is accused of.
