FIRE DESTROYS HISTORIC BUILDING IN MONTREAL’S CHINATOWN

An apparently abandoned four-storey building in Montreal has been destroyed by fire.

Over 120 firefighters responded to the 9-1-1 call after 11 a.m.

The Robillard building was built in the 1890s.

According to the city of Montreal, Louis Minier used a room there in June 1896 to project the first moving picture film – making it Canada’s first movie theatre.

Minier worked for the Lumiere brothers, who are credited with inventing the early motion picture camera.
