We haven’t heard the last of the standoff over the Van Gogh Sketchbook produced by a Toronto art historian that the Van Gogh museum says is full of fakes.
In a statement, Bogomila Welch-Ovcharov has challenged the museum to a public debate between experts over the book’s veracity.
A spokesman for the museum dismissed the statement as a simple rehash of the book’s contents which the museum has already dismissed. The controversy emerged Tuesday after the publication of “Vincent van Gogh: The Lost Arles Sketchbook”, which was researched and authored by Welsh-Ovcharov, the 76 year old professor emeritus of Art History at the University of Toronto.
The Van Gogh Museum’s doubts are shared by many in the field, including the associate curator of European art at the National Gallery of Canada. She said it would be very unwise for any curator or scholar to act in direct defiance of the Van Gogh Museum’s conclusions.
