ALS VICTIMS WANT ACCESS TO EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENT

ZoomerNews2016-11-22By: Classical Staff

The Canadian activist group “Right to Try” wants terminally ill ALS patients to have access to experimental treatments in a last-ditch effort to stave off the deadly disease.

Ironically, the group will used Canada’s new assisted dying law as the basis for the action in hopes that lives will be saved.

The group wants permission for individuals with terminal illnesses to try drugs that are still in the development phase, before they are approved by Health Canada. “Right to Try” argues that because most of these individuals would be legally entitled to a doctor-assisted death, they should also be permitted to take the risk of an experimental drug.

So far, nearly 100 patients with terminal conditions from across Canada, or their family members, have joined the group.

Right to Try has been lobbying politicians in Ottawa, and will hold discussions this week with federal officials. At the moment, only three per cent of patients get the opportunity to try experimental treatments
