Records fell last night when a 1926 painting by Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris set a new standard for a Harris work of art becoming, in the process, the most expensive piece of Canadian art ever sold.
The oil canvas “Mountain Forms” went for $11.2 million at the Heffel Fine Art Auction in Toronto last night.
The painting actually sold for $9.5 million but an 18% buyer’s premium boosted the final tally to $11,210,000
The new owner has chosen to remain anonymous.
