ONTARIO’S BILL 41 – PATIENT’S FIRST ACT – OR NOT?

With Bill 41, Patient’s First Act, about to become law, the province calls it an important step toward providing patients with faster access to the right care, better home and community care.

”We’re going to see an investment in increased bureaucracy so this bill will not decrease your wait times for surgery, it will not open up the doors for more long-term care beds, it will not allow you to see your doctor any quicker. What this bill will do is create more bureaucracy, more red tape and make it harder and harder for you to access the health care that you need.”

The Tories health critic will be one of the guests Thursday on ”Fight Back” with host Libby Znaimer after the news at noon.

Meanwhile, the group representing doctors in the province calls the bill a significant step backwards.

Ontario Medical Association President Dr. Virginia Walley says, ”It is troubling that the government’s response to the needs of patients is to increase their own power over local planning, increase the number of administrative jobs in health care, and create duplicative forms for doctors to fill out. None of what the government is doing will add a single cent to make front line care more accessible to patients.”
