This week on Sunday Night at The Opera
Mahler, Das Lied von der Erde

Earth Day weekend is all the excuse I need to play you one of my favourite pieces of all time, Gustav Mahler’s song/symphony Das Lied von der Erde, the song of the earth. In a valiant effort to beat death, which seemed to descend on composers after they composed their 9th symphony, he wrote this grand symphonic song cycle instead, based on Chinese poems about love, life, spring and drunkeness. While he did not manage to beat death,   his magnificent Song of the Earth lives on forever in the voices of Johann Botha and Karen Cargill, with Donald Runnicles conducting.

Tune in to Sunday Night at the Opera this Sunday at 9pm.
