IGOR STRAVINSKY (Born: June 17, 1882 – Died: April 6, 1971)
Widely considered one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century, Stravinsky was a composer, pianist, and conductor.
Today we take a closer look at his wildly popular orchestral work The Rite of Spring.
104 years ago, Stravinsky debuted The Rite of Spring in a packed theatre in Paris, with a ballet performance that would go down as one of the most notorious — and violent — of the 20th century.
Information surrounding what exactly happened on May 29th, 1913 remains unclear. There are little official records or eyewitness accounts to go on, but what we do know is Stravinsky’s grand debut ended in riots, mayhem and absolute chaos!
Whether this excitement was started by the music or dance, political unrest or simply a well-played publicity stunt, is something the experts still debate today.
