Today we’re celebrating the music of composer Arvo Pärt, who was born on September 11, 1935 in Estonia. His music is deeply lyrical, intimate, with a touch of classical, religious, and Gregorian chant. The featured piece, with violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, “Spiegel im Speigel” (Mirror in Mirror) is an example of the minimalist style – very few notes, nothing busy or bombastic. The piano accompaniment uses the instrument’s highest and lowest notes; the piano Pärt grew up with had a badly damaged middle register, and that influence is evident here.
