This past Saturday, Cocktail Maestro Norm Owen encouraged us to take a second look at vermouth. Most often used as a partner to stronger spirits, vermouth has a depth and complexity that earns it the right to take centre stage! Just pour into a glass with ice, at an orange twist if you like. If you feel adventurous, try it with an anchovy-stuffed olive – divine!
Good entry level vermouths: Dolin, Carpano Antica Formula. Also great to explore: any vermouth from Spain!
Vermouth cocktails you might try:
2 oz dry white vermouth
1 oz Benedictine
1 bar spoon of Absinthe
Stir in a mixing glass on ice, and strain into a couple. Garnish with a twist of lemon. Enjoy!
Note from Norm: Do refrigerate your vermouth. It is essentially wine, and will eventually go off, probably sooner than you can finish it! If possible, use a vacuum sealer such as Vacu-Vin.
The Vermouth Cocktail
2 oz good quality sweet (red vermouth)
.25 oz Cointreau
3 dashes Angostura bitters
Stir on ice, and strain into a coupe and savour!
