Music that takes you to an other worldly place: Arvo Part, whose birthday is September 11

Music that takes you to an other worldly place: Arvo Part, whose birthday is September 11 featured image

Composer Arvo Pärt turns 83 today. He was born on September 11, 1935 in Estonia. His music is deeply lyrical, intimate, with a touch of classical, religious, and Gregorian chant. The featured piece, a cello arrangement of “Spiegel im Speigel” (Mirror in Mirror) is an example of the minimalist style – very few notes, nothing busy or bombastic. The piano accompaniment uses the instrument’s highest and lowest notes; the piano Pärt grew up with had a badly damaged middle register, and that influence is evident here. This video features cellist Leonhard Roczek and pianist Herbert Schuch.

This work is simple yet resonates deeply. On a side note, I’ve page-turned for this, and I had to remind myself to breathe.

Arvo Part was born September 11, 1935 in Estonia.
