If you’d like hear about “a personal journey to the North”, then you’ll enjoy hearing this interview. Dave Bidini visited “Classical Mornings” with Mike and Jean to chat about “Midnight Light”, his latest book.
You may know of Dave Bidini from his work as a member of the Rheostatics, or from his journalism, or previous books he’s written. He is the only person to have received nominations for a Gemini, Genie, and Juno. His (lucky) 13th book, “Midnight Light”, documents his travels to Yellowknife, where he wrote for “The Yellowknifer” newspaper (he broke the story about the KFC closing – a blow to the community – you’ll find out why in the interview below). He also introduces his readers to an assortment of folks in a near internet-free community, from entrepreneurs to lawmakers/enforcers and – I love this line from the press release – “an assortment of complicated souls from the South who have travelled North as a ‘last chance’ to build lives for themselves.”
As I walked him down the hall to the exit, I was chatting with him about my curiosity about life in the North, and he said, “nobody judges you in Yellowknife.”
