What’s on at the TSO this week? A concert with conductor Thomas Dausgaard and cellist Alisa Weilerstein, that’s what. Ms. Weilerstein will perform the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 2, a work written for legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. This work is melancholy and inward-looking, and the cellist and orchestra play equal roles (as opposed to the soloist getting all the melodies while the orchestra serves as backup).
After intermission, Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra is featured. This work is full of European folk melodies that Bartok gathered and studied all his career, and the concept of this work is to feature the entire orchestra as “the soloist”.
The program opens with Langgaard’s Prelude to Antikrist, the composer’s only opera, which was based on P.E. Benzon’s 1907 dramatic poem.
