American tenor Stephen Costello’s meteoric career has taken him to the stages of the world’s top opera houses. In his first recording for Delos, “A Te, O Cara”, he dedicates a glittering assortment of bel canto arias to his friend, the late Dmitri Hvorostovsky. (Bel canto literally means, “beautiful singing”, referring to a style of smooth, flexible singing with equally even high and low notes.) Constantine Orbelian and his vaunted Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra provide perfect orchestral collaboration in this recital of Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi.
For a quick peak, here’s Stephen Costello singing “Ah, lève-toi soleil” from Roméo et Juliette (Gounod). Jonathan Kelly, piano.
Sunday Night at the Opera with host Alexa Petrenko airs at 9 PM.
