Against the Grain Theatre Artistic Director Joel Ivany and soprano Miriam Khalil (also co-founders of ATGT) visited “Classical Mornings” with Mike and Jean to chat about their recent JUNO Nomination in the “Classical Album of the Year – Vocal or Choral” category.  The album, entitled “Ayre”, is an electric song cycle composed by Osvaldo Golijov with Arabic, Hebrew, Latino, Sardinian, and Spanish influences.  They chatted about the album’s inception, working with composer Osvoldo Golijov, and Mariam, an Arabic speaker, asking her dad to confirm pronunciations. By the way, Miriam will portray Mimi in the Canadian Opera Company’s upcoming La Boheme starting in April.

The 2019 JUNOs take place in London, Ontario, and the Classical awards are handed out the night before the Sunday telecast. The Classical ceremony is Saturday, March 16, 2019.

Against the Grain does great things, by taking classical repertoire and shaking it up via new interpretations, types of venues (like bars) with smaller “back-up bands” – meaning, no full orchestra, but a pianist or small ensemble, so you can experience classical music, including opera, in a more intimate setting. No opera glasses required.
